Parenting

Parenting is hard; juggling between activities and trying to cater to your little energy balls’ needs without losing your mind is hard work. Again today, there is a constant need to know what your child is up to on their devices. With technology everywhere, parents are trying to be sure kids aren’t digesting digital junks all day and getting the wrong teachings online. It’s almost like salt on the injury.

These are some realities of 21st-century parenting. We are living in an entirely different world than our parents grew up in. Technology has redefined parenting, and while you’d quickly want to point fingers at the observable ways technology is making parenting harder today, there are also some exciting ways technology is making up and easing parenting for us all. Here is a list of six ways technology makes life easier for parents and can do the same for you.

eBooks and Audio Book

One of the ways technology is easing the stress in our parenting journey today is the abundance of ebooks and audio books. If you have a child that loves to read, and you are tired of getting them a whole collection of books only for them to finish it in a few days and ask for more, then you will love how eBooks and digital libraries have made your life easier (and also save you lots of money). And if your child is a lazy reader, then you will love the audiobooks. Besides storybooks, having textbooks that are now eBooks is also an excellent way technology makes life easier for parents

Mobile phones

A lot has been said about giving your child a mobile phone. Despite the negatives, it does have several positives. You can use your child’s phone to track their whereabouts, they can use it to call you in an emergency, and it’s an excellent way to communicate and stay in touch with your children. Parents can set reminders on their phones – if you have a forgetful child like mine, you appreciate this little feature. As a parent, knowing that you can reach your child at a moment’s notice gives you great peace of mind.

Video calls

Before the pandemic, video calls using Skype, Zoom, Facetime, etc., was a fantastic way to keep in touch with family from all over the world. My kids enjoyed “face timing” their cousins on special days, and they loved receiving birthday video calls. Post pandemic, online learning was possible due to video calls. With movement restrictions and the kids missing their friends, it was a tool that became a “lifesaver”.

YouTube

You are having a tough time trying to solve brain-racking assignments for your kids? Or trying out a new dish but having little or no ideas on how to start preparations? Perhaps you intend to organize a virtual birthday party for your kid; YouTube is your go-to site. This website has many video contents such as tutorials, reviews, how-to and all forms of video information for parents and kids.

Search Engines

Another reason why technology makes life easier for parents – it provides information whenever, wherever. With search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo, parents can quickly look up information, hacks and get answers to questions and even expert opinions on a myriad of issues.

Educational apps

Educational apps range from quizzes to worksheets, videos and games. They provide visual learning experiences that allow children to learn at their own pace. These apps have activities designed to support the child as they progress and master tasks. They can typically track the progress of the children and award badges, medals, points, etc. As a parent, Duolingo was a great app my son used to learn French (especially as his parent don’t know or speak French, lol)

Parenting is way easier in the 21st century with tools and fantastic resources made available through technology. The list cannot be exhausted. I hope you take some time to look at the positive sides of parenting in the 21st century and the role technology plays in making the burden lighter today.
