When I came across these maths hacks, I asked myself why didn’t I have these hacks as a kid? I probably would have been a Math genius”. As a parent, we are always looking for hacks to make this parenting journey easier and since most parents “hate” Maths, these hacks are fantastic.

Subtracting from 1000

There’s a quick and straightforward rule for subtraction from 1,000: subtract all the digits from 9 and the last number from 10.

Finding the easy percentage of a number

Here is a quick, easy peasy way to find the percentage of a number, simply divide both sides by ten and then multiply the answers together,

Here we go, 50% of 300

Division by 5

Dividing large numbers by five is, in fact, pretty simple. All you need to do is multiply your number by two and then move the decimal point.

Let’s take a look, 195 ÷ 5

Multiplication by 11 made easy

Need to multiply a number by 11? We’ve got that covered too. Take your number and split it up into individual numbers. If a single number, that’s simple enough, of course. Now separate the numbers apart and add the individual numbers together. Stick this answer between the other two numbers, and boom, you get your answer!

Let’s take this example; 35 × 11

Easy multiplication by 4

Did you know you can make your multiplication by four a lot easier by using this simple hack? Take the number you want to multiply by 4. Multiply it by two first. Then multiply the product by two again! Nice and easy. Let’s have a look at an example, shall we?

How about multiplying four by, say, 32

Quick multiplication by 5

Divide a given number by 2. If the result is a whole number, add 0 at the end. If the result is not a whole number, ignore the decimal and add five at the end.

For example; Let’s multiply 35 by 5

The butterfly method of adding fractions

The butterfly method of adding fractions is a straightforward math hack every child should know, and this is how it goes. First, you multiply the numerators and denominators diagonally and add them together; that becomes your new numerator. Then, you multiply the denominators together, and that becomes your new denominator.

For example ¾+ ⅛

A quick method to finding Square roots

And the last hacks on our list to help your kids ace math is finding square roots. Most kids might find this difficult, but here is an easy trick you can always use. This little trick is great for finding the square root of a two-digit number that ends with 5. To do this trick, simply multiply the first digit by itself plus 1. Then you’ll need to add your numbers together and physically tag, 25 to the end of the answer you get from the addition.  Then you get your answers nice and easy

For example, let’s find the square root of 35

Maths can be challenging, but these Maths hacks are a fun way to ace Maths, and for your child to see Maths is not as difficult as they think.
