Education

Homework is nobody’s favourite thing to do, either as a parent or a child. After a long day of school or work, focusing on homework doesn’t sound fun. A survey shows that over 70% of students dislike homework. The majority of kids don’t like homework and they also dislike their school teachers who assign so many tasks daily. Nevertheless, assignment plays a key role in the education process,  it helps children obtain in-depth knowledge, improve skills and ability to work independently. That is why we have put together 8 effective and efficient tips that can help children get their assignment done better and faster.

Set a homework routine or Timetable

Most parents have found themselves helping their child complete homework very early in the morning while also juggling that with preparing breakfast. To avoid this, designate a set time for homework. Once your child is used to the daily routine, it makes the process a lot smoother. A daily routine means that everyone in your household will be on the same wavelength when it comes to homework, which also makes room for enough time for parents to be involved to review the work with the kids

Make a space in your home for homework

Creating a space for assignment is a must. This workspace must be free from distractions and conducive enough for studying. No matter how small the distractions are, they can all add up and cause the task to take a lot longer than it should, and this is a simple hack that will help you avoid this from happening.

Create a homework box

To prevent your kids from forgetting those stationaries on their homework desk and going to school without their pencils or pen, there is an easy way out. Create a homework box where all stationeries are kept after use. This can be a special pencil case or bag where they can keep all of their pencils, pens and other school essentials like glue sticks and erasers.  By doing this simple thing, the days of having your child run around the house in search of crayons and therefore extending the time homework takes will be over!

Make sure some healthy snacks are at hand

Do you know a hungry child is a distracted child? To help keep kids motivated on the task at hand, make sure they’ve got a few healthy and brain-boosting snacks nearby, as they won’t be in the mood to tackle homework if they are hungry. Things like nuts, chopped fruit or vegetables are just the easy way to keep kids motivated

Turn off all of the distracting technology

Work time is different from playtime, let that difference be clear. When it’s time for homework, turn off the TV, iPads, phones and other electronics so that concentration is fully on the task. This helps them work a lot faster.

Use (some) technology to help

While removing distracting technology from the equation when it is time for homework, on some occasions it can actually help get the job done faster and make learning fun. Therefore only make technology accessible when they need to do some important research or learn something that relates to the homework. Some schools now subscribe to online learning tools like 9ijakids to help kids play fun games related to homework task. Kids access over two hundred fun learning games across every subject. This makes homework fun and makes the thought of homework less boring

Let them do their homework

Are you that parent that always wants to do your child’s assignment? You can reduce this and make sure you don’t get over-involved.  If you help too much, you might be covering up a larger problem that is unknown to the teacher. Your child’s teacher needs to know when your child is having a challenge with any topic. It is okay if your child isn’t getting the scope of the work, it helps the teacher find out the problem and know where to focus on. It may also be that your child isn’t developmentally ready to understand such a task but doing the assignment yourself just outrightly covers up the challenges your child is having. If you find yourself starting to do the work for them, take a step back and begin to explain how your child can work out the answer rather than just filling it in yourself.

The thought of doing homework doesn’t have to be stressful and boring but with the right approach, you can make it fun and easy for your child. If you notice your child is struggling every day to get assignments done, don’t keep it to yourself alone, have a word with the teacher as it could be that the assignment is too difficult or the teacher is just overloading the child with too much work.
